Will it Float ... Will it Float?

We're heading for a Wedding.....!    That Will Rodger's Folly's tune was on my mind this weekend.  Yes, it's all about the Wedding Cake branding for our new series "Love Beyond the Wedding."  We've been building a giant 8 foot cake designed to float in Valley Creek's Pond as part of the promotion.  We also build a smaller (but still pretty big) 7' Cake to be on display in a local Town Center.  It's all about the Branding.

I could hear the theme song of David Letterman's recurring game "Will it Float" in my head as we watched the giant Wedding Cake take sail into Flower Mounds largest body of water.

That Takes The Cake

I would never in a thousand years believe that I would be doing ___________.   Have these words ever been yours?  I've certainly been thinking this lately.  Easter is coming and this year our focus is on launching our new sermon series.  Our pastor will be preaching out of 1 Corinthians 13... the LOVE chapter.  We're hoping that our once-a-year Easter attender will be compelled to return for the whole series which is entitled; "Love Beyond the Wedding."

We are big on branding our series at VCC.  I love the aspect of creating a look and communicating it to the community in hopes that they will visit and hear God's word.  For this series, we are using images of marriage and the wedding.  Here is a sample of our Direct Mailer which is being send to thousands of homes in this area.

The common image for this series is actually the Wedding Cake.  We're thinking there are many creative options we have with a Wedding Cake.  We're even thinking of having a real Wedding Cake in the Atrium to serve to folks on the last weekend of the series. 

In front of our church, we have a pond.  So one of the ideas we had is create a large wedding cake and float it in the pond.  We didn't think the city would allow us to do that, but as it happens, they don't have any law or rule against it.  So with green lights, we're working to make this happen.  Check this pic out...

I never thought I would be overseeing the construction of a gigantic wooden wedding cake that will be floating in our pond outside the church!

This is our Wedding Cake being built by Tom.  HUGE!  I think Tom's wife, Dawn, is ready to get that thing out of the driveway! 

Thanks Tom for all your work and to Dawn for enduring the Easter Wedding Cake.  Now we have to decorate the thing.  Icing anyone?

The Sacrament Of Failure

There is a huge expectation for artists today to be original and innovative in reaching today's culture with the message of Christ.  As we attempt this, what happens if we fail?  It is OK? 

In Phil Cooke's  "Change Revolution," he answers a resounding YES.  In fact, he encouraged his team to fail big.  "I want my team to fail because they dreamed big, stretched too far, over-reached, or tried something new that no one has tried before."    

Creativity requires risk.  "A wide door for effective work has opened," the Apostle Paul wrote to the church at Corinth, "and there are many adversaries" (I Cor. 16:19). The potential for failure is certainly one of those adversaries.

Leonard Sweet writes that because Jesus “…expects us to fail, and has provided us with a sacrament of failure, we can shake off the shackles that fetter us to success and be free to fail without guilt, without embarrassment, without timidity."

O Brother, Where Art Thou

We've been spending time with my younger brother, Todd.  He just recently turned another year older.    We celebrated his Birthday at Maggiano's in Plano.  Awesome Italian fare.  What a treat.

Todd is in a transitional move.  Miss you Boy.  Keep him in your prayers during this transition.

Times of Reflection cause me to think about the roller coaster of living.  From the highs of success and loving life to the lows of instability and losing loved ones, we all ride the ride.  The nature of people desire the security of routine but the nature of God doesn't comply at all. 

What's up with that?  Why is this happening to me?  "That's not how we do things around here."   This common declaration to pastors from their flock is now as humorous to me as it must be to God as He listens to our cries.  It is really for our own good or is it just punishment (which can't be good at all).  It's amazing how adults can sound like their own children at times.  Do we ever really grow up?

Reflection is a matter of position and can be revolutionary perspective.  Putting yourself in someone else's shoes is a phrase we easily use but find hard to accomplish.  Because if we truly put aside our selfish motives and take on the feelings of others, we find understanding, compassion, and love for others.  Or we can just ride the ride of live focused on self and never truly experience the joy of the ride.  Yes, you can have joy through the lows as well as the highs. 

Reflection.  Perspective.  Selflessness.  The formula for true joy.
