The Memphis Mob had Whataburger on the mind. Whataburger makes a fine (greasy) burger, I'll give you that. But given the choice between a burger and BBQ, I'm going for BBQ every time. Luckily, we were on Inwood Road in Dallas, Texas where the original Sonny Bryan's BBQ. Dating back to 1910, this order-at-the-counter spot has been a Dallas mainstay gaining much attention from The Food Network and countless articles on BBQ.
As Memphis lined up at Whataburger, I was able to pick up several defectors... Charlie and David. Together we three sought out the rustic accommodations of this Dallas must-visit spot. Once there we noticed the often-hard-to-come-by seating consisting of picnic tables outside and old-fashioned school desks inside.
We got our food and sat outside in the great weather sharing a table with two other men who were USC fans. We exchanged a couple of football jabs while we enjoyed the food.
Back at Whataburger, the Memphis gang sat in a straight line saving seats for the no-shows who decided to party at Sonny's. Getting those guys away from the Texas BBQ was like pulling teeth. Finally, we meandered back to pick up the rest of Memphis all greased up and full of Texas burger.
We found Sonny's to be a place with much character and very good food. I don't know if it was the beautiful day or the Buckwheat Zydeco music playing in the restaurant or just the company, but we thoroughly enjoyed it.
WHATEVER!
