One of my favorite movies is The Rookie starring Dennis Quaid. This movie is a true story based on a Texas high school coach named Jim Morris who thought his
dream was over. He'd had his shot playing baseball, blew out his
shoulder, and retired without ever making it to the big leagues. Then,
in 1999, Coach Morris made a fateful bet with his perpetually losing
team. If they won the district championship, Morris -- who threw a 98
mph fastball -- would try out for the majors. The team went from worst
to first, and Jim, living up to his end of the bargain, threw caution
to the wind and was on the road to becoming the oldest rookie in the
major leagues.
We all cheer for the underdog; the people with unlikely odds but coachable hearts; the ascending players who only need the right leadership and encouragement.
The real Jim Morris pitched in 21 games for Tampa Bay in 1999 and 2000 before
shoulder surgery ended his 2000 season; he retired with a sore shoulder
while in spring training with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2001. He now lives in Texas again.
The lesson: Don't give up on your dreams. God wants to bless you and give you the desires of your heart. Don't grow faint of heart. Have faith. Run the race.
It's always good to be reminded and encouraged to continue pursuing our dreams. I have not seen The Rookie but I think I just might have to now. :)
