Israeli archaeologist say they've found the tomb of King Herod, who ruled the Holy Land when Christ was born. The find, which could provide insights into one of the Bible's most reviled yet influential figures, includes hundreds of pieces of an ornate sarcophagus, but no bones and no inscription that would seal the identification yet. Plans are to continue the excavation with the hope to find more.
To many people, Herod is best known for his alleged role in the events known as the Massacre of the Innocents, an account of which is given in Chapter 2 of the Gospel According to Matthew. Herod is particularly known for his dramatic expansion of the Second Temple in Jerusalem which is sometimes referred to as Herod's Temple. And of course, today the last remains of Herod's Temple is the Western Wall or Wailing Wall.
This location of Herod's Tomb solves a 2,000 year-old mystery. I'm curious as to what will be unearthed and how it will play out in today's media.
